C, E-flat and G walk into a bar and the bartender says: “Sorry we don’t serve minors”, so E-flat leaves, and C and G have an open fifth between them. After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished and G is out flat. F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.

D comes in and heads for the bathroom saying, “Excuse me. I’ll just be a second.” Then A comes in, but the bartender is not convinced that this relative of C is not a minor. Then the bartender notices B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and says, “Get out! You’re the seventh minor I’ve found in this bar tonight.”

E-Flat comes back the next night in a three-piece suit with nicely shined shoes. The bartender says, “you’re looking sharp tonight. Come on in, this could be a major development.” Sure enough, E-flat soon takes off his suit and everything else, and is au natural.

Eventually C sobers up and realizes in horror that he’s under a rest. C is brought to trial, found guilty of contributing to the diminution of a minor, and is sentenced to 10 years of D.S. without Coda at an upscale correctional facility.

So, today my daughter had a dentist appointment at 2pm.
I picked her up at school at 12:30, so we could make it on time, since we now have to take the bus everywhere.
We've been doing this for some 3 weeks now, using the buses.
To get to most places, we have to take 1 bus downtown, then get on another to reach our destination.
It's cheaper and better for the environment than driving my own car, so I feel good about that.
It's time consuming. It's a lesson in patience.
I take the time to enjoy the time with my daughter.
We can't just rush off to an appointment, and then rush back home so I can get back to work.
Today, after the dentist appointment, we took the bus back downtown the New Haven Green (bus hub),
then went to the Salvation Army, bought her 1 sweater and myself a flannel shirt. (total $10.00).
We had other plans, and it was cooling off.
Then we went to Gourmet Heaven and had a bite to eat, and then to the Library.
New Haven has a lovely library.
My kid took out 6 books on deductive reasoning, forensic science, logic, and detective work.
(She's developed an obsession with Sherlock, the BBC program, and Benedict Cumberbatch).
Then we caught another bus home. 12:30 to 6:00pm out, just to get one filling.
But we make adventures of these little excursions, take advantage of being downtown.
Last time, week before last, after the dentist (she's been in for a series of fillings),
we visited the Yale British Art Gallery, and had a lovely time.
So, taking the bus isn't so bad.
And we even took the train to go see my Mum last weekend.
Taking the train ain't so bad, either. Even when I had a car, we always took the train to go to Manhattan.
(Nowhere to park a car there, anyway). And we took the train to Norfolk, VA to spend Christmas with my kid's mom.
So, public transportation is pretty cool.

I do still rather miss having a car (and especially my Saab).
And, I have made one observation:
I am often the only white male on the bus.
Here in the US, environmental concerns aside, if you're a white male, you're supposed to drive your own car.
And if you don't, not only are you deficient, but you're undateable. But whatever...
That's the kind of "self-determination" (read "selfish prick") attitude that's got our environment all fucked up,
isn't it?

So, yeah, I'm on the bus.
